What a weekend! Four events over three days to celebrate this bar mitzvah and, thanks to Viva and Lindsay of Lindsay Landman Events, every detail was perfect. Our team - coming from New York and LA - met in San Francisco and drove out to our weekend digs in Menlo Park (thank you to both Jeni and Patrick for your help!).
The weather was perfect for Friday's backyard welcome dinner. Jazzy vocals floated through the late afternoon while family and friends greeted each other over cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. We played trivia after dinner - a family tradition - and ended the evening with some a cappella entertainment.
Saturday morning we arrived to find a spread of coffee, donuts, and fresh fruit smoothies. The bar mitzvah service, expertly orchestrated, was held under one of the most unique tent designs I've ever seen and our celebrant was adorably enthusiastic about every part. The sincerity in the smile on his face had every one of us charmed. Guests enjoyed a buffet lunch after the service with options including brick-oven pizza baked on site, a sumptuous offering of sushi, an extensive salad bar, as well as hotdogs, sliders, chicken tenders, and fries.
Saturday evening's celebration was held at Rosewood Sand Hill, a chic retreat near the Santa Cruz mountains. Adults dined in style under an open-air tent structure and floating globes of twinkling light. The younger contingent roistered, playing games like skeeball, air hockey, and giant beer pong, grooving to a silent disco, and gaping in amazement at a magician's machinations. The two groups joined forces to celebrate on the dance floor.
The weekend concluded with a sweet farewell over Sunday brunch - guests chatted over bagels and schmear, omelettes cooked to order, a Bloody Mary bar, and an impressive array of fruits and pastries. The morning was grey but warm, as family and friends hugged their goodbyes.
These special events have a unique ability to bring people together - far flung family members, friends we've moved away from, special people closer to our every day - ritual connects us; and this California bar mitzvah was particularly special for having brought guests together from all over the world. It's really a beautiful thing to see and to document and I'm grateful for the experience.
